Thrice Interview Series: DARKER STILL
Yay! Today I’m celebrating the release of fellow Apocalypsie Leanna Renee Hieber’s DARKER STILL (MAGIC MOST FOUL #1).
The Picture of Dorian Gray meets Pride and Prejudice, with a dash of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
New York City, 1882. Seventeen-year-old Natalie Stewart’s latest obsession is a painting of the handsome British Lord Denbury. Something in his striking blue eyes calls to her. As his incredibly life-like gaze seems to follow her, Natalie gets the uneasy feeling that details of the painting keep changing…
Jonathan Denbury’s soul is trapped in the gilded painting by dark magic while his possessed body commits unspeakable crimes in the city slums. He must lure Natalie into the painting, for only together can they reverse the curse and free his damaged soul.
About the Thrice Interview Series: The original title for BORN WICKED was THRICE BLESSED. I have a tattoo with the word thrice, which is partly to remind me how joyful writing the first book was, back when it was just mine, and partly because I like threes. Cate Cahill is one of three sisters, as am I. My birthday is May 3; my anniversary is Sept 30; my book deal happened when I was 30. So…you may notice a common theme to my interview questions.
1. Describe your main character in 3 adjectives + a noun.
Natalie is a feisty, brave seventeen-year-old with a disability.
2. Describe your book in 3 adjectives + a noun.
DARKER STILL: A Novel of Magic Most Foul is a spooky, passionate thrill-ride into old New York.
3. Describe yourself in 3 adjectives + a noun.
I am a perky, Goth, Victorian-era-obsessed Slytherin.
4. If you could travel to any 3 countries, what would they be?
England (again, I’ve been tons of times, it’s never enough), Poland, Czech Republic (I would’ve said France and Germany but I was blessed to visit last year and I’d love to return but I need to cross more countries off my bucket list!!)
5. If you could take any 3 non-writing-related classes, what would they be?
Art History, German (language), Sign Language
6. If you could have 3 alternate careers, what would they be?
I’d return to acting full-time which was my first professional work and sometimes still is part of my career (and seeing as a production company is turning my first novel, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker into a musical, theatre hasn’t left me!), or I’d work at a museum and give tours, or I’d get involved with animal rescue (with a focus on bunnies – I’m the proud momma of a rescued lab rabbit).
JESS’S NOTE: I want a bunneh! And a musical based on my work! Wow.
7. What are 3 of your favorite flowers?
Black roses, red roses, purple roses
JESS’S NOTE: Love this answer! We heart roses around here.
8. What are 3 of your favorite foods?
Mac & Cheese, Soy bacon (I’m vegetarian), New York City pizza
9. What are 3 of your favorite books?
Jane Eyre, Harry Potter (all of them!), The Picture of Dorian Gray (and all three of these serve as obvious inspirations for my work!)
Thanks so much for the interview, Leanna! I can’t wait to read DARKER STILL. Happy book birthday!
