Thrice Interview: RED

Hi! Today we’re celebrating the release of Alison Cherry’s RED, which comes out today! They say:   Felicity St. John has it all: loyal best friends, a hot guy, and artistic talent. And she’s right on track to win the Miss Scarlet pageant. Her perfect life is possible because of just one thing: her long, wavy, coppery red hair. Having red hair is all that matters in Scarletville. Redheads hold all the power—and everybody knows it. That’s why Felicity is scared down to her roots when she receives an anonymous note: I know your secret. Because Felicity is a big fake. Her hair color comes straight out of a bottle. And if anyone discovered the truth, she’d be a social outcast faster than she could say strawberry blond. Her mother would disown her, her friends would shun her, and her boyfriend would dump her. And forget about winning that pageant crown...

Shut Up & Write

Tomorrow (Thursday) at 7pm, I’ll be participating in a new panel series at the Arlington County Library: Shut Up & Write! Jon Skovron, Diana Peterfreund, and I will be chatting about writing first drafts and NaNoWriMo. This is the first in a series of bimonthly panels Jon and I have been organizing all summer, and we’re really excited about it. Going forward, Jon will be the moderator. Our next panel will be December 12, and Cristin Terrill, Jeri Smith-Ready, and Elisa Nader will be discussing writing tools and software. We were inspired by the fantastic panels David Levithan organizes at the NYPL, and wanted to do something for the writing community in DC that is more focused on craft instead of promotion. One More Page Books will be on hand to sell books for the authors to sign, but we really want to have in-depth conversations about the writing processes...

Manuscript Critique Services

I’ve got some really exciting news! And if you’re an aspiring writer, I hope you’ll find it exciting, too! Along with my amazingly talented friends Elizabeth Richards (BLACK CITY), Paula Stokes (THE ART OF LAINEY) (but you might also know her as Fiona Paul, who writes the VENOM series), and Tara Kelly (HARMONIC FEEDBACK), I’m starting a critique service! I really love doing critique. I think I’m good at it, too. I adore finding the strengths of a manuscript, identifying what we want to see more of, and encouraging writers with smiley-faces and hearts in the margins. But I also like finding the fault lines in a manuscript – places a reader or potential agent or editor might trip, and asking those tough questions about pacing, logic, character motivation, and world-building. I studied new play development in grad school, and I really loved working with playwrights on new scripts, and...

Thrice Interview + Giveaway: NOT A DROP TO DRINK

Hi! Today we’re celebrating the release of Mindy McGinnis’s NOT A DROP TO DRINK, which came out last Tuesday! They say:   Regret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.  Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn’t leave at all. Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand. But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and...

Thank You + Links of Note

Hi! Thank you all so much for the outpouring of enthusiasm for the SISTERS’ FATE cover! I’m working on responding to all of your comments! I’ve just chosen the winners for the contest – congratulations to @Desi_Gay and @Kikisdreambooks, who were both tweeting madwomen! In the meantime – I’ve updated my Events page because I’ve got 4 events coming up in October! The first one is on Thursday, Oct 3 at the Arlington County Library. It’s a panel called Shut Up & Write –  which is kicking off a new series of author panels focused more on the craft of writing than promoting our books. I’m helping organize these and I’m really excited. In the inaugural one, I’ll be talking with Jon Skovron and Diana Peterfreund about first drafts! Come see us? I also have a bunch of fun links to share: At Adventures in YA Publishing, I shared Cate, Maura, and Tess’s bucket lists. Of...
