Celebration

Hi! OMG. Thank you all so, so much for being excited for me and BORN WICKED.

Thank you doesn’t seem like nearly enough. I feel very grateful to have such amazing friends and to be part of this wonderful, welcoming YA writing community.

To celebrate, I’d like to have a giveaway:

1st prize: a dozen cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake

2nd prize: a bouquet of your favorite flowers from FTD

3rd prize: any book of your choice that you’ve been coveting from Amazon (’cause I have free shipping through Amazon Prime)

The method to my madness: In BORN WICKED, Cate finds herself attracted to the new gardener. There’s a scene where she tells him she wants to find out all the little things about him: what his favorite flower is, his favorite food, his favorite book.

All you have to do is leave me a comment telling me what your favorite flower, food, and book are, and you’ll be entered to win! Please comment by noon on Friday and make sure there’s some way for me to contact you. Also: the contest is only open to people over 13 years old, who aren’t related to me, and who are US residents.

For the record: Cate’s favorites are peonies, strawberries, and THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON. Mine are red roses, cardamom cookies, and GONE WITH THE WIND.

Also: BORN WICKED is on Goodreads now if you’d like to add it!

Fun! I love cupcakes, flowers, and books.

My answers: orchids, blueberries, and this is a really tough one but I'll have to say LIFE OF PI. That's the only book that can still inspire passionate debate many years after I've read it.

    1. I have blueberries right now. You are inspiring me to go eat them instead of these treacherous Girl Scout cookies.

I've had LIFE OF PI forever but haven't read it yet! I think you guys did that one in book club while I was in grad school.

What girl doesn't like cupcakes, flowers and books???

My favorite flower is snapdragons, my favorite food is cannoli, and my favorite book – ugh, this IS tough – I'm going to be a geek and say the final Harry Potter book. 🙂

  3. Lilacs–I can't see them in the spring/early summer, without thinking of my Grandmother.
Risotto–I enjoy the process of making it, sharing it and of course, eating it. And it can be a side or a main dish. Also, very versatile, all sorts of flavor combos.
Pillars of the Earth–It's the only book I can think of where I finished the last sentence and immediately turned back to the front page and started again.

  4. Ohhhhh, what a fantastic contest! (And Georgetown Cupcake is the BEST cupcakery ever!)

My favorite flowers are a toss-up between peonies and hydrangeas (I can't just pick one!), my favorite food is mashed potatoes, and my favorite book…hmm…that's really hard! I'll go with THE THINGS THEY CARRIED because I re-read it recently and it awed me just like the first time.

    1. I don't like the big fluffy pink or multicolor peonies, but my mom had some wine-colored ones that were gorgeous. And pure white ones too.

My bff is an English teacher who teaches THE THINGS THEY CARRIED to her students, and I've still never read it!

  5. Lilacs.
    Sushi.
I think my favorite book is probably The Martian Chronicles. Or maybe, like Caroline, it's The Things They Carried. … Wait, maybe it's To Kill a Mockingbird?

All three of these are awesome things!

    Favorite Flower: Tulips
Favorite food: Cake. Any kind pretty much. Particularly the kind in my head that I want to make for my birthday next week- White cake, with Raspberry Jam filling and White Chocolate Mousse frosting.
Favorite Book: To Kill A Mockingbird. I've read that book about so many times, my copy is starting to fall apart.

    1. I planted tulips for the first time ever last fall and they're sprouting and I feel like I'm stalking them. I check on them every morning and I'm ridiculously excited for them to bloom.

That cake sounds AMAZING. The bday cake my mom used to always make for me is white cake with strawberries & whipped cream between the layers and vanilla buttercream. It's still my favorite cake ever!

  7. Favorite flower: Clematis
    Favorite food: popcorn
Favorite book: Jane Eyre (I own 3 copies) or maybe Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier — my copy has pages coming out of it

  8. Congrats, again, on the book deal! This is such a fun contest…

Flower: Hydrangeas (This is the most beautiful, delicate, perfect flower in existence. Guess that's why it's my favorite…)
Food: Sushi (My hubby doesn't like sushi much, so whenever I get this it's a major treat. yum, yum, yum!)
Book: How do I pick just one?!? I'm going to go with Jackie-O and say Harry Potter, but the first book, not the last. I distinctly remember reading this book as a teen and it has forever changed what I believe is possible in and wonderful about the fantasy genre.

    1. Thanks, Erin! When you come to visit us in DC, we should go to Sticky Rice–it's this sushi place near me that also serves buckets of tater tots. It's genius.

I think THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN is my favorite HP.

      1. Ooh that one is definitely my favorite of the series, in terms of plot/twists/genius-ness. But there is something about that first book and what it did for me as a person/young teen, that cannot be topped!

I will totally take you up on the sushi suggestion! Now if only July could hurry up and get here 🙂

  9. Yay for Born Wicked! (and you! and this contest!)

    Tulips!
    Sharp cheddar cheese!!
Favorite book: that's hard! I'm going to go with Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, just because it's so lush, complex and fully realized that I don't think I'd ever be able to write anything like it!

That's a lot of exclamation points. But I've never had Georgetown Cupcakes (and I live close by in Alexandria so there's really no excuse!) and I'm excited to possibly win some!

    1. Thank you!

Extra-sharp cheddar cheese is one of my favorites. When it's nice out, sometimes my husband & I just sit on our porch & drink white wine & have bread & cheese for dinner & brainstorm plots (he's a playwright).

I've heard lots of awesome things about Jacqueline Carey's books, but I've never read them!

    These are really hard. 😉

Favorite flower: Lilies (OK, that one was easy).
Favorite food: The Chocolat Fondant at Napoleon Bistro.
Favorite book: I don't have one! There are too many, I couldn't pick. And Harry Potter isn't just a book to me, it's a million other things too, so I can't pick that. So, I'll go with the book I read in the past year that I still think about the most, even though "favorite" really doesn't seem like the right word for it, but: The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

    1. I love calla lilies; my bridesmaids carried white ones! Alas, lots of other lilies make me sneezy.

What is The Chocolat Fondant? That sounds amazing. (Whilst I'm reminiscing, my wedding cake was square, chocolate with chocolate-fondant icing. It was amazing.)

  11. Alissa

    Congrats again Jessie!
Right now I'm obsessed with bells of Ireland.
Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries, preferrably together in pie form.
I have to say the Harry Potter books.

    Alissa

    1. I just had blackberries for dinner! Something about the (hopefully soon) coming of spring makes me crave fruits & veggies. Which is awesome bc I am vainly trying to slim down before I have to get author photos! 😉

  12. melissa m walters

Snapdragons, Cadbury Cream Eggs (does that count as a food?), and I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith.

I am still SOOOOOOO happy for you! I can't wait to read it 🙂

  13. Katy Dailey

    Hmmm…

    Flowers: Bleeding Heart & Columbine

Food: Does tea count? Because it really is my favorite thing to put in my tummy.

    Book: Anne of Green Gables
