The Next Big Thing Meme

Hi! So, the awesome Marie Lu tagged me in “The Next Big Thing” meme, where I’m supposed to talk a little about what I’m working on and then tag 3 people whose next books I’m mega-excited for! Thanks, Marie, for saying such lovely things about BORN WICKED!

I’m not going to tag Marie back, but I got to read the beginning of her new project, THE YOUNG ELITES, and it is SO COOL. I also got to read PRODIGY early and I think I might love it even more than LEGEND. It’s a crazy-good page-turner. Day and June’s voices are so distinct, their journeys so fascinating, their conflict so genuine (never contrived, as conflicts in romance can sometimes feel). I don’t know who to trust! I don’t know what’s going to happen in book 3 but I cannot wait to find out!

As for my answers:

1. What is the working title of your book?

Cahill Book 3 (CB3 for short). I have NO title ideas for this one. If you do, please share!

2. Where did the idea come from for the book?

From BORN WICKED and STAR CURSED and the natural progression of things, plus probably everything I’ve read this year, plus the bazaar scene in GONE WITH THE WIND, and Laurie Halse Anderson’s FEVER 1793, and Michelle Zink’s PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS.

3. What genre does your book fall under?

Alternate-historical paranormal romance? (witches + sisters + kissing?)

4. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Ooh, Andrew Garfield or Ben Whishaw (the new Q in Skyfall) are my hipster dreamcast Finns. Elle Fanning is very like Tess. Model Lily Cole looks like Maura (only Maura’s a bit curvier). There’s a picture on my Pinterest board where Chloe Moretz looks like Cate.

5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

I can’t tell you! It’d be an enormous spoiler for STAR CURSED.

6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

It’ll be published by Putnam (Penguin Books for Young Readers) summer 2014.

7. How long did it take you to writ the first draft of your manuscript?

Well, it’s due at the end of February, and I started it in mid-Nov right after I finished SC copyedits, so…hopefully 3-4 months? I’m not very far along yet.

8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

People have compared the books to Libba Bray’s Gemma Doyle/A GREAT & TERRIBLE BEAUTY series, which always pleases me greatly because I loved them!

9. Who or what inspired you to write this book?

The sad predicaments I left them in at the end of STAR CURSED. Which I hope will make you all cry, because I am a tiny bit evil.

10. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

A Christmas bazaar. A daring rescue. A Cahill Christmas. Cate using magic in public. Flu. Fire. Death. And more kissing! (All elements except kissing + death are subject to change, by the way.)

And I’m going to tag 3 of my friends (but no pressure if they don’t want to play!):

Robin Talley

Miranda Kenneally

You know who I think closely resembles your description of Finn: Eddie Redmayne. He was in ‘My Week with Marilyn’ and will be in ‘Les Miserables’.
