Thrice Interview: CROAK

Hi! Today we’re celebrating the release (yesterday) of CROAK by Gina Damico!

The synopsis: Fed up with her wild behavior, sixteen-year-old Lex’s parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than shoveling manure. He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach Lex the family business. She quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. But Lex can’t stop her desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she encounters a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. Will she ditch Croak and go rogue with her reaper skills?

My thoughts: I was lucky enough to read CROAK early and I really, really enjoyed its blend of hilarity, thoughtfulness, and small-town quirk (with the Grim twist). This book definitely brings the LOLs. The banter between Lex and her potential boy is fantastic. I can’t wait for the sequel, SCORCH. Fortunately, it’s only 6 months away! Also, have you seen the awesome trailer?

Ok, interview time:

1. Describe your main character in 3 adjectives + a noun.

Lex is an intelligent, independent, impulsive Grim.

2. Describe your book in 3 adjectives + a noun.

CROAK is a snarky, quirky, groin-grabbingly funny barnburner. (Jess’s note: I think groin-grabbingly is my new favorite adjective.)

3. Describe yourself in 3 adjectives + a noun.

I am a snarky, quirky, groin-grabbingly funny barnburner. (Jess: Hee.)

4. If you could travel to any 3 countries, what would they be?

Australia, because when I lived there for four months I only got to see most of it, not all. Peru, because I want to hike the Inca Trail, climb up to Macchu Picchu, and promptly fall off a mountain due to exhaustion. And Namibia, because you guys, it has GIRAFFES.

5. If you could take any 3 non-writing-related classes, what would they be?

Cake Decorating, Skydiving For Fun and Profit, How To Make Delicious Cheeseballs Right In The Comfort Of Your Own Home.

6. If you could have 3 alternate careers, what would they be?

AMAZING RACE Producer, Roller Coaster Designer, Alpaca Farmer (Jess again: if you become a producer on AMAZING RACE, will you introduce me to Phil? I totally have a crush on him.)

7. What are 3 of your favorite flowers?

Orchids, Roses, Audrey II from LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

8. What are 3 of your favorite foods?

Olives, milk, and deep fried chocolate chip cookie dough (Get thee to your nearest state fair and try some RIGHT NOW. Your taste buds will thank you. Your colon probably won’t.)

(Jess: Olives are gross but you totally redeemed yourself with the cookie dough, Gina.)

9. What are 3 of your favorite books?

Off the top of my head: THE CITY OF DREAMING BOOKS by Walter Moer (is that not the best title ever?), ROOM by Emma Donahue (not for everyone, but oh man, I killed it in less than 24 hours), and THE PIGEON FINDS A HOT DOG by Mo Willems (Yes, this is a children’s picture book. Yes, I adore it.)

Thanks so much for stopping by, Gina! Happy book-birthday!
