Inspired by dinner last night at matchbox, one of my favorite DC restaurants.   1)    Thin crust OR deep dish?   2)    Meat OR veggie?   3)    Pineapple: wondrous OR just plain wrong?   4)    Sicilian OR round?   5)    Good old-fashioned mozzarella OR more exotic cheese, please?   6) Delivery: Domino’s, Papa John’s, OR Pizza Hut? OR other?   Bonus: What’s your favorite pizza ever?

Question Friday: Winter Edition

Snow: yay OR nay? Mittens OR gloves? Hot chocolate: with mini-marshmallows, peppermint, OR salted caramel? Sleds: the old-school kind with runners OR plastic? Snow angels OR snowmen? Bonus: Icicles: enjoy their pristine beauty OR knock them down? When we have a good snow like this, I feel a little homesick. Some of my favorite family memories are of sledding up at my grandparents’ house. My uncles built a bonfire at the top of the long driveway and filled coffee cans with rags and kerosene to serve as torches. They took turns standing at the bottom, watching for unlikely backroads traffic. We’d shoot down the driveway, screeching and giggling, until we sparked across the macadam and into the field across the road. The dogs would chase us, barking. Sometimes we’d build trains, grasping hands to feet, but they’d usually snake apart halfway down, and we’d abandon the sleds as they veered toward trees. Part of the fun was seeing my dad and...

Cured

I wrote for two hours last night. Not necessarily brilliant, but it’s a start. I’m finding that unless it’s a kissy scene or a fight scene, I write dialogue and Molly’s thoughts and reactions first, then layer in the description around those. This first scene gave me an idea for another scene that wasn’t on my outline but has to happen. And it will be so much fun to write! Her boyfriend’s obligatory dinner with the family. I suspect a trainwreck.   I have so many fun plans next week! Steve has kindly alerted me to a new round of pay-what-you-can performances (yay cheap theatre):   Hell Meets Henry Halfway at Woolly on Monday   Dante’s Divine Comedy at Synetic on Thursday   And last but not least (!) Sarah Ruhl’s adaptation of Eurydice at Roundhouse next Saturday afternoon. Thanks to my Latin 4 class in high school, I have a passionate love for mythology. I...

Procrastination

How do you know when you’re ready to start something new?   Part of me thinks, Oh, I need another hour day week to noodle. To daydream and nap and read and play with outlines and write little alternate-pov scenes and talk about writing.   The other part of me thinks, Dude, you’re being such a chicken. You are scared to write a crappy first draft. The silly thing is that it will be crappy, because it is a first draft, and then you will revise. You like revising, remember? Sussing out the weaknesses, figuring out how you’ll fix them? It’s like sunshine after the clouds shift. That is an amazing feeling. Your dramaturg brain loves it. And you have to write the first draft to get there. (You like that part too. You just don’t remember.)   I’ve been restless for weeks. Perhaps…since three weeks ago, when I sent off book1 to my critique group. Haven’t written...

Shiny!

Look! seaheidi gave me a Kreativ Blog award! In case you don’t know, she is made of awesome. She interviews debut writers, she loves Gossip Girl, she does yoga, she’s a mom, and her books are going to be amazing! I’m supposed to share 7 things I love. At the moment, the first 7 that come to mind are:   Snow! It’s our first real snowfall here and it’s so pretty! Working at a university with a very generous president. We’re closing at 3:30 and opening late tomorrow (at least 10 a.m., though we’re supposed to be on the lookout for further delay/closing due to the forecasted ice). It’s a perfect cozy snow-globe day to go home and do some work on the new book. Tea. I got this fantastic new black-cherry berry flavor that I love. And the cranberry-apple zinger that I bought on sale this weekend is pretty good too. ...
