Away

Hi! I’m in NYC this week for vacation. Most of my travel this year has involved promotion for BORN WICKED, which has been amazing, but this is a just-for-fun trip with The Playwright. As big Amanda Palmer fans, we backed her Kickstarter, so we get to attend two of her concerts this week (a big one at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and a small acoustic gallery show). We’re also seeing two theatrical shows (although Amanda Palmer is pretty damn theatrical herself) – the urban acrobatic show TRACE and the musical ONCE (with Awesome Agent Jim). And having dinner with friends tonight in Williamsburg and getting to see Andrea and meet her new puppy and lunch with Editor Ari and hang with our grad school friend Meg before she jets off to London this fall. It’s kind of a busy five days. But there’s also a hammock in our hotel...

Craving

I am hungry for other people’s stories. I want to spend days reading in front of the fan, gobbling up words. I devoured the entire first season of Friday Night Lights in three days. I’m reading articles in The Atlantic and on blogs about having it all as a woman, about the tricky balancing act of family and ambition. I’m sleeping just to dream of strange worlds and dangerous monsters. There are days when I cannot wait to write — books, emails, lists, anything, I feel so full-up of words — and then there are days, weeks, like this, when I am insatiable. I don’t know what I’m looking for. Inspiration? Perspective? Fortitude to dive back into this manuscript that feels like it’s constantly breaking me and then remaking me with the hope that maybe this time I’ve got it right? I am scared. Writing is what I love most, and now...

Thrice Interview + Giveaway: SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL

Hi! Today we’re celebrating the release of Trish Doller’s awesome debut, SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL, which is one of my favorite reads of 2012! The synopsis: When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero. My take: Travis, a Marine struggling with PTSD after his best friend’s death, comes home from Afghanistan...

Monday Misc.

1. Thanks to everyone who participated in my Fall Breathless Reads contest! The winner is Geek Girl! But stay tuned because I’m having another contest tomorrow for one of my favorite books of 2012! 2. Did I tell you guys Penguin is doing a cover shoot for the new BORN WICKED paperback — and for STAR CURSED and book 3 at the same time? I got to see potential models for Cate, Maura, and Tess last week and I love them! They look so much like my girls. I can’t wait to see pictures from the shoot! 3. BORN WICKED sold rights in Indonesia and Turkey last week! Yay! 4. Last week I went on an amazing writing retreat with the spring Breathless Reads girls — Andrea Cremer, Marie Lu, and Beth Revis. We stayed at Andrea’s family’s lake house in Minnesota and it was gorgeous. Nothing makes me happier than the sound...

Thrice Interview: REUNITED

Hi! Today we’re celebrating the release of Hilary Graham’s REUNITED. 1 concert. 2000 miles. 3 ex-best friends. Alice, Summer, and Tiernan used to be best friends—as well as the self-proclaimed biggest fans of the band Level3. But when the band broke up, so did their friendship. Now, four years later, they’ve just graduated from high school. When Level3 announces a one-time reunion show in Texas, Alice impulsively buys tickets and invites her two former friends along for the trip. Reluctant at first, both girls agree to go, each with her own ulterior motive. But old resentments and other roadblocks—from unintended detours to lost concert tickets—keep getting in the girls’ way. Will their friendship get an encore, or is the show really over? I haven’t had a chance to read this one yet, but it sounds awesome! Now for the interview: Describe your main character in 3 adjectives + a noun. Yikes!  I...
