I’m currently working on a new project that I’m super excited about, and I’m hoping to have more news to share soon. In the meantime, the best place to find and connect with me online is Instagram.

Book 2 Update

1. I’m at 37,000 words. I think this is probably halfway! I can definitely feel the draft (and the plot) gaining momentum. I wrote one of my favorite chapters last week. The Playwright says it’s one of his favorites too. (Unlike most of my favorite scenes, it involves no kissing. Just friendship and magic and danger and ladies losing their tempers.) 2. This is my first time working from a detailed outline. I still get stuck, though, when I’m not sure what my characters would say to each other in a certain moment. It took me three days to figure out the first words between Cate and her godmother. 3. Outline notwithstanding, my favorite moments are still those serendipitous little surprises that sneak their way in. When I have that sudden flash of inspiration, it’s so exciting. That above-mentioned favorite chapter–half of it wasn’t even in the outline! And it’s...

Creepy Reading Recs

So, I’m going to California next week! For 12 days! I will be in San Diego visiting my bestie Jill, and then The Playwright and I are going to drive up the coast (we’re renting a convertible!) and visit a bunch of wineries and the crazy Winchester House and stay in some awesome B&Bs, and then we’re going to hang out in San Francisco for a long weekend (and see the Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer show)! If you are in any of these places and have suggestions on Fun Things To Do, I would love advice. I’ve never been to CA before! (This is also, by far, the longest vaca The Playwright and I have ever taken. It’s a combination book-deal and 5-year-anniversary celebration. We wanted to go to CA for our honeymoon and couldn’t afford it. I’m REALLY excited.) Because I am a giant dork, I am not...

Fashion Friday

First: Congratulations to Book Crook Liza, who won my contest for BORN WICKED and THE CATASTROPHIC HISTORY OF YOU & ME. Thanks so much to everyone who entered and helped me spread the word about the first two chapters in the Penguin sampler! Second: I just wrote a post over on The Nightstand about why I heart THE VAMPIRE DIARIES. You should go read it and leave me a comment telling me why you heart it. (If you don’t watch it yet–you should!) Third: I went a little crazy ordering armwarmers this week. I got four pairs, all from Zen and Coffee’s Etsy shop, but these two are my favorite. Owls! And crazy corset gloves that I’m going to wear for Halloween! Have you made any fun or silly purchases this week? Tell me about it in the comments!

Thrice Interview Series: DARWEN ARKWRIGHT & THE PEREGRINE PACT

Hooray! Today I’m celebrating the release of fellow Apocalypsie A.J. Hartley’s middle-grade fantasy, DARWEN ARKWRIGHT AND THE PEREGRINE PACT. Eleven-year-old Darwen Arkwright has spent his whole life in a tiny town in England. So when he is forced to move to Atlanta, Georgia, to live with his aunt, he knows things will be different – but what he finds there is beyond even his wildest imaginings! Darwen discovers an enchanting world through the old mirror hanging in his closet – a world that holds as many dangers as it does wonders. Scrobblers on motorbikes with nets big enough to fit a human boy. Gnashers with no eyes, but monstrous mouths full of teeth. Flittercrakes with bat-like bodies and the faces of men. Along with his new friends Rich and Alexandra, Darwen becomes entangled in an adventure and a mystery that involves the safety of his entire school. They soon realize that...

Four Months ’til BW ARC Contest

EEP. Guess what? Only FOUR MONTHS until BORN WICKED is released! I had my first marketing call on Wednesday, and exciting things are starting to happen. For instance, Penguin created this postcard to hand out at the Austin Teen Book Festival last weekend: You can follow this link to read the first chapters of these 5  fabulous books–including the first TWO chapters of BORN WICKED! To celebrate the four-month mark, I’m giving away a signed ARC of BORN WICKED and an ARC of Jess Rothenberg’s THE CATASTROPHIC HISTORY OF YOU AND ME. Which just landed on my doorstep this afternoon. After reading the sampler, I can’t wait to dive into it. The contest will be open internationally until next Friday, October 14, at noon. All you have to do to enter is leave me a comment. BUT if you’d like an extra entry, you can tweet, or Facebook, or blog about the sampler...
