I’m currently working on a new project that I’m super excited about, and I’m hoping to have more news to share soon. In the meantime, the best place to find and connect with me online is Instagram.

Outlining

I’m working on an outline for book2, the sequel to BORN WICKED. It’s tricksy. I didn’t write an outline for Garolass, the book that didn’t sell. I did write one for BW, and I think it helped to have those signposts as I was drafting, although things changed an awful lot as I wrote, and parts of it were pretty spare. I had lunch with The Playwright on Tuesday, and we brainstormed over sushi rolls and Diet Coke. Then I turned things over in my head for another 24 hours and sent the outline to Editor Ari yesterday. It needs some work. We brainstormed on the phone today for 45 minutes. I think she was worried I’d be upset that it needs some work, but I was ready and willing to hear suggestions. Excited, even. I’ve never written a detailed outline before, never written a sequel before, never written a book...

I ♥ Monday (On Tuesday)

♥  CATCHING JORDAN by Miranda Kenneally. About a girl quarterback whose position on her team and role as one of the guys are both threatened when a hot transfer student joins her team. I’ve never thrown a football in my life, and yet Jordan is so relatable. I love that she’s such a strong leader, that when she realizes things are wrong or broken she tries to fix them instead of waiting for someone to do it for her or come to her. I love that she’s a girl who eats unapologetically and wants to have sex and that the boys are crude and hilarious and actual boys instead of the way girls want boys to be. I love that it’s laugh-out-loud funny, but she also learns things about being a girl (like: not all cheerleaders are evil!) and sharing her feelings. (Disclaimer: Miranda’s a friend but I wouldn’t rave...

Full Time

People have been asking me what it’s like to be a full-time writer. I’m only a week in, but my standard answer is: wonderful…and profoundly weird. I’m very grateful. SO grateful. It is a dream come true. But it is also a big change–a rather seismic shift in my life. Leaving the job I’ve been at for all of my adult life. Having time–too much time, maybe–to think about these dreams coming true, reflecting in a way I haven’t been able for the last four months because of the insane deadlines. (Is this really happening? I do not feel like I deserve it.) I imagine that as we get closer to BORN WICKED’s release and promo things ramp up, along with the first-drafting of book2, it will be exponentially busier. But at the moment: How do I structure my day? When do I stick to the to-do list and when...

Fashion Friday

The Meyer Meringue, Cirque A-Line, and Backswept Dresses from Anthropologie I bought the Meyer Meringue and wore it last night to the opening of the CapFringe Festival, and it was perfect. So summery! I got several compliments. It has an adorable attached petticoat, but it’s still light enough to wear in the July heat, and it has pockets. I adore dresses with full skirts and pockets! The Cirque doesn’t immediately look like my thing, aside from the yellow sash. Black and white? Boring. But if you look closer, the print is elephants. How cute and quirky is that? And the Backswept…I don’t know if I could pull it off, but I love how adorably retro it is. I keep coming back to it. Maybe if it goes on sale? What about you? Anything you’re coveting at the moment?

Catalogue Ahoy!

Guess what? The winter 2012 Penguin Young Readers Group catalog is online! Which means I can share something exciting: Penguin chose my book cover for the cover of this catalogue! You can see it here. Isn’t it pretty? I feel very honored, although I had nothing whatsoever to do with the shininess of the cover. I mean, I’m honored just to be included in this catalogue, because they’re publishing so many amazing books! (Special shout-out to my fellow winter 2012 Apocalypsie Penguin girls, Sara Etienne Wilson/HARBINGER and Lizzie Foley/REMARKABLE. I can’t wait to read both of their books! Perhaps, when there are ARCs, I will plead for them and then give them away to YOU, dear Readers.) There’s also an excerpt from Chapter Two of BORN WICKED in the catalogue. If you’re curious, check out page 160! ETA: The Cahill Witch Chronicles has sold in France! For new readers, this...
