I ♥ Monday

KAT, INCORRIGIBLE by Stephanie Burgis. You know how some books have awesome characters you want to be friends with, or awesome plots that make you unable to put the book down because you totally have to find out what’s going to happen, or awesome settings that make you want to climb inside the book? This book has all three! It’s a delight from start to finish. Kat Stephenson is smart and plucky and hilarious. She’s going on my list of favorite heroines, right alongside Frankie Landau-Banks and Hermione Granger. I can’t wait to read the next book in this trilogy!

♥ FRANKENSTEIN. I saw the National Theatre’s production starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Creature and Jonny Lee Miller as Dr. Frankenstein and it was astounding. Especially Benedict Cumberbatch. And there was nothing sexy about him in this role–except the staggering talent. The first fifteen minutes were all movement as the Creature came to life, and that alone made the two hour screening worth it. If you’re in DC, I highly recommend you get yourself to Shakespeare Theatre on April 23 to see it. If you’re not in DC, see if it’s playing near you. We’re going back to see the leads play opposite roles!

♥ Georgetown Cupcakes’ lemon blossom cupcake. I took a dozen cupcakes home, ostensibly to celebrate my sister’s acceptance into the University of Utah grad program. I may have sampled three or four of them myself, and the lemon blossom was my favorite of the bunch.

Laini Taylor’s blog. Every time I read it, I’m inspired: by the writing, by the colors and textures, by the way she explores and finds stories everywhere. It’s my favorite.

♥ My amazing editor, Ari, and her assistant Paula. I sent them a new outline for BORN WICKED this morning and within two hours they’d sent it back, marked up all to hell with comments and questions and suggestions. And I mean that in a good way. Their notes are so smart! I’ve taken two weeks to brainstorm–lots of tossing ideas around with The Playwright and my best friends and an hour’s worth of brainstorming on the phone with Ari–and now I’m ready to dive back in and rewrite. I’m making lots and lots of changes, but I’m so excited about them!

What are YOU loving today?

  1. NOM NOM those cupcakes look amazing. I still haven't been to Georgetown Cupcakes! I am a sucker for a good Red Velvet 🙂

Today I'm loving the free samples at costco! And having clean socks. It's catch-up-on-my-chores day, lol.

      1. Guinevere, who's coming to the retreat, is apparently a baking aficionado and wants to make tons of cupcakes for that weekend. I told her that we MIGHT be persuaded to taste her creations 😉

Stephanie Burgis' Kat books are the best! (I've been super-lucky and got to read the whole trilogy in draft–the series just keeps getting better). I can't wait for Kat, Incorrigible to be out in the US so that everyone there can discover Stephanie's writing.

And yay for a happy and productive editorial encounter! Your excitement is contagious.

    1. You've gotten to read ALL THREE of them? I'm so jealous! I really can't wait to read more.

I'm going to give away a copy of KAT when it comes out (not to mention buy one for me, since I read it thru GalleyGrab). It's one of those awesome books I want to share with everyone–definitely one of my favorites of 2011 so far!
