Thrice Interview: CROAK

Hi! Today we’re celebrating the release (yesterday) of CROAK by Gina Damico! The synopsis: Fed up with her wild behavior, sixteen-year-old Lex’s parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than shoveling manure. He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach Lex the family business. She quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. But Lex can’t stop her desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she encounters a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. Will she ditch Croak and go rogue with her reaper skills? My thoughts: I was lucky enough to read CROAK early and I really, really enjoyed its blend of hilarity, thoughtfulness, and small-town...

Dear Teen Me

Hi! I’m proud to announce my first contribution to an anthology! Edited by Dear Teen Me blog founders Miranda Kenneally and E. Kristin Anderson, the letters in DEAR TEEN ME cover a range of topics, including physical abuse, body issues, bullying, friendship, love, and enough insecurities to fill an auditorium.  So pick a page, and find out which of your favorite authors had a really bad first kiss? Who found true love at 18? Who wishes he’d had more fun in high school instead of studying so hard? Some authors write diary entries, some write letters, and a few graphic novelists turn their stories into visual art. And whether you hang out with the theater kids, the band geeks, the bad boys, the loners, the class presidents, the delinquents, the jocks, or the nerds, you’ll find friends–and a lot of familiar faces–in the course of DEAR TEEN ME.  I’m thrilled that my letter “Finding Him” (about...

Thoughtful Thursday

Because I love lists, things on my mind today:  Exactly how angry is Maura with Cate? What is Paul’s role in Cate’s life now? What does he think of her decisions? Will I be allowed to reveal the title and release date for book 2 tomorrow? (maybe! stay tuned!) I’m not really great at internet hiatuses. But I’m using Scrivener, playing around with scenes out of order in book 2, and it’s making it feel fun again! Yay! I am so relieved by this. Should I dye blue streaks in my hair? I’ve done pink before… I hope the play we’re seeing tonight (CIVILIZATION at Woolly Mammoth) is as good as the play we saw on Tuesday (RED at Arena Stage) which was my favorite thing I’ve seen in ages. I wonder if all siblings have moments of “Why does s/he get everything?” I read a little gem of a...

Brief Hiatus

Hi again! I have a few things to share today: First: I’ve been reading Cynthia Leitich Smith’s amazing blog for years, and have often been inspired by her interviews with new authors, so I was super-excited and honored to be featured on Cynsations yesterday! You can read about my revision process, what I did when I got The Call, and how I think BORN WICKED is relevant today. She is giving away 5 ARCs of BW, too! Second: in addition to my signing this Saturday at 4pm with Miranda Kenneally at One More Page in Arlington, VA, I am doing another local event in March! I’ll be doing a panel and signing at Hooray for Books! with Tiffany Trent (THE UNNATURALISTS, CORSETS & CLOCKWORK) and Caitlin Kittredge (THE IRON THORN, THE NIGHTMARE GARDEN). It’s Saturday, March 24 at 3:30 pm. Please come hang out with us! Third: I am going to take an internet hiatus...
