I’m currently working on a new project that I’m super excited about, and I’m hoping to have more news to share soon. In the meantime, the best place to find and connect with me online is Instagram.

Thankful Thursday

O.M.G.   This week has been teh crazy.   On Saturday, Steve graduated. In the most interminable ceremony in the rain. But it was fun because we were texting back and forth. Everything is fun with him. We celebrated at Matchbox with his parents and then at a crazysauce BBQ with the other grad actors, playwrights, and directors. Much wine. Much laughter. A few tipsy chatty phone calls to my friends.   On Sunday, my little sister came for an impromptu visit, fleeing stupid-boy drama and summer-vacation boredom. It was so fun to see her. Having my family visit always feels HUGE because they hate the city. Seriously, I think I can count on one hand the number of times they have visited in the last five years, even though they are only an hour and a half away.   On Monday, we toured a few more houses and condos that our agent had...

Question Friday: 5 Classes

Steve is graduating tomorrow! He’ll have his MFA in playwriting. It’s been pretty incredible to watch his work improve over the last four years. He’s developed a more theatrical style, a signature sense of humor, a wonderful openness to criticism and collaboration, and some fantastic contacts within the DC theatre community. He had a reading on Tuesday of his newest play, and afterwards we had dinner and fantastic dramaturgical discussion. I am so excited to see where his career goes next.    So…if you could take classes in anything at all, what 5 things would you study? After a less-than-wonderful grad school experience, I’m done with school for a bit. But eventually…I love syllabi and assigned reading too much to stay away. My answers to this change all the time, but today I’d go with:   1. Writing for children & young adults (I really want to do this program at Vermont College someday)...

Shiver ARC Contest: Team Ravelda

So,   reminded me that Maggie Stiefvater is running a fab contest. All you have to do is post the pre-order link and the blurb for Maggie’s new book Shiver (which I am personally super-excited to read), then go back to Maggie’s blog by 8 p.m. on the 15th and tell her that   (aka Karen Kincy) sent you. If we get the most entries, Karen wins: – a signed ARC of SHIVER – 4 signed copies of LAMENT (which she has offered to share) – and for each of the friends that she gets to comment (aka us), a critique of the first 5 pages of any of their manuscripts Here’s Maggie’s blurb: For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf–her wolf–is a chilling presence she can’t seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen...

Question Friday: Musical Edition

So the sun is shining (FINALLY) and I can’t help but think: Oh what a beautiful morning/ oh what a beautiful day./ I’ve got a beautiful feeling/ everything’s going my way. Those lyrics were cemented into my brain during endless rehearsals back in eighth grade. This Question Friday is brought to you by the enduring power of musical lyrics to sneak into your head and take up permanent residence.   Classic movie-musicals: The Sound of Music OR My Fair Lady OR Singing in the Rain?  Contemporary movie-musicals: Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia, OR Hairspray?   Andrew Lloyd Webber: Les Miserables OR Phantom of the Opera?   Hipster kids: Rent, Spring Awakening, OR Hair?   Modern classics: Chicago OR Cabaret?   High school drama faves: Oklahoma OR Fiddler on the Roof?   What’s your all-time favorite musical?

Worldbuilding Help

I am about to launch into a hopefully-final-before-querying round of revisions on my Garolass book. I’m going in armed with dozens of notes from myself and from my critique group. I haven’t even looked at the ms in two months, so I’m feeling some healthy objective distance.   One common critique has been that I need to strengthen the world-building, expand on the differences between our world and Garolass. So I ask you, dear readers: what are some elements that make worldbuilding successful for you? Here is my little list: language differences: slang? curses? religion: do they believe? worship? rituals? government: representative? oppressive? monitoring? hereditary or elected? tech differences: communication? limits of bio/med-tech? entertainment? appearances: both how people look & fashion social hierarchy: what makes a have vs. a have-not? wealth? talent? culture: status of art? music? theatre? books?!   What about you? What do you most want to know about another world?
