I’m currently working on a new project that I’m super excited about, and I’m hoping to have more news to share soon. In the meantime, the best place to find and connect with me online is Instagram.

4 Things That Make Me Happy & 1 That Does Not

1. Today is my bestie’s birthday. Rosaline is made of awesomesauce. She loves books and tea and reality TV, she teaches high school English, and she tells it like it is. She’s my go-to girl for pretty much everything, whether it’s painting my guest room or critiquing my book. Happy birthday, Ros! I would be so lost without you.   2. I am going to 3 concerts next month! Snow Patrol & the Plain White T’s, Rhett Miller, and Regina Spektor. I love live music and I realized after seeing a couple shows last winter that I don’t do it nearly enough. I’m so excited!   3. Steve found out yesterday that he’s getting a new alumni award from our undergrad. It’s for leadership, scholarship, and service in the arts shown by a young alumni (from the last 15 years). He’ll receive the award at their fall convocation, which is also the grand opening of the...

Question Friday: Southwest Cuisine Edition

Salsa OR guacamole?   Tacos: hard OR soft shell?   Fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, OR quesadillas? (What’s the difference between an enchilada and a burrito, anyway? I’m not sure I know…)   Chicken, beef, OR veggie?   Salsa showdown: mild, medium, OR hot? Chipotle OR salsa verde OR black bean OR mango-peach OR…?   BONUS: What’s your very favorite taco combination?   Mine is probably a soft taco with black beans, peppers, onions, squash, salsa, sour cream, and cheese. Nom. I am also very intrigued by the gorditas with roasted pumpkin & poblano peppers or zucchini with basil and Cotija cheese on the menu at the H Street Country Club.

Gardening

Ack. So, this has nothing to do with writing or reading, but I am a very new homeowner. I’ve never had a yard before. My mom is a champion gardener. I used to follow her around our old house at dusk, when the shadows were long, chattering away about band practices and play rehearsals while she watered her plants. The light was gorgeous and golden, the grass cool beneath my bare feet, the shadows long–my favorite time of day. I remember that fondly. But I never really paid attention to how she does it. Truth be told, I’m an indoors girl unless there’s a pool nearby and a book in my hand. Still, something about a yard without flowers seems empty to me. I need to plant some stuff, preferably before our housewarming on Sept. 12. On Mom’s advice I’m definitely ordering some "easy care" pink shrub roses to plant along our iron fence out front....

Readerly Links

1. Did you all see NPR’s list of 100 Best Beach Reads? I’ve read about 1/3 of them and some of my all-time favorites (Gone with the Wind, Little Women, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Harry Potter series) are there. There are also several books I’ve been meaning to read, like The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and The Time Traveler’s Wife. 2. There’s a woman in Scotland who is about to borrow her 25,000th library book. She is 91 and has been borrowing at least six books a week since 1946. That makes me happy. 3. Check out this book trailer for Lipstick Apology, one of the summer’s most-anticipated YA novels. It’s on my must-buy list. 4. My BFF Rosaline just wrote a fab review of Sea Change. I loved that book to pieces. We discussed it last night over flourless chocolate waffles (mmmm) and while...

Bravery & Shoes

I am grumpy today, so I bought a pair of shoes. See?   Life has been all about the waiting lately: to close on the house, for Steve to get back from Sundance, for the central air to get fixed (which finally happened today), to find out what’s wrong with the Monkey-cat. As soon as one problem is solved, another crops up. Monkey’s bloodwork showed some high liver numbers, so he has to take antibiotics for two weeks to see if it’s actually a liver problem or an infection from some dental issues. (The vet doesn’t seem too worried since he doesn’t have other symptoms.) The A/C is fixed, but now the dishwasher is backing up into the sink and vice versa (which: ew). It’s all fairly minor stuff, but it’s been keeping me preoccupied. As soon as I feel like we’re settling into a new routine in the new house, something pops up.  ...
